When Self-Humanization Leads to Algorithm Aversion

چکیده
Abstract Decision support systems are increasingly being adopted by various digital platforms. However, prior research has shown that certain contexts can induce algorithm aversion, leading people to reject their decision support. This paper investigates how and why the context in which users making decisions (for-profit versus prosocial microlending decisions) affects degree of aversion ultimately preference for more human-like (versus computer-like) systems. The study proposes vary affordances self-humanization. Specifically, perceive as relevant self-humanization than for-profit contexts, and, consequence, they ascribe importance empathy autonomy while contexts. increased leads a higher aversion. At same time, it also stronger support, could therefore serve remedy an induced need results from online experiment theorizing. discusses both theoretical design implications, especially potential anthropomorphized conversational agents on platforms decision-making.

When Losing Leads to Winning 1 When Losing Leads to Winning
In general, the further individuals, groups, and teams are ahead of their opponents in competition, the more likely they are to win. However, we show that through increasing motivation, being slightly behind can actually increase success. Analysis of over 6,000 collegiate basketball games illustrates that being slightly behind increases a team’s chance of winning. Teams behind by a point at hal...
متن کاملWhen intended remembering leads to unintended forgetting.
As a means of clarifying the memory dynamics that underlie retrieval-induced forgetting, we explored how instructing participants either to remember or to forget a previously presented list of items influences the susceptibility of those items to inhibition. According to the inhibitory account of retrieval-induced forgetting, it is the items that interfere most with retrieval practice that shou...
متن کاملWhen Pain Management Leads to Medication Errors
Pain has been described as “the fifth vital sign” since the late 1990s.1 Unlike the traditional vital signs of temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, pain is not a sign per se but rather a symptom; as such, it is entirely subjective.2 When clinicians make treatment decisions for patients, objective signs can be reliably monitored, they are typically reproducible, and the effe...

متن کاملWhen crowding of crowding leads to uncrowding.
In object recognition, features are thought to be processed in a hierarchical fashion from low-level analysis (edges and lines) to complex figural processing (shapes and objects). Here, we show that figural processing determines low-level processing. Vernier offset discrimination strongly deteriorated when we embedded a vernier in a square. This is a classic crowding effect. Surprisingly, crowd...
